Each year, Hermosa Inn hosts a beautiful dinner party that celebrates Oscar season with a touch of fashion, whimsy and elegance. This year’s annual pre-Oscars party had a wonderful theme of a “Touch of Grace.” Grace Kelly, that is! Scottsdale.com was honored to take part in the fun event.
Guests were entertained and treated to a fashion show by Robert Black, Founder of the international model and talent agency, Ford Robert Black Agency, and owner of Fashion by Robert Black in Scottsdale. The fashion show for the evening featured vintage fashions inspired by the elegant and classic looks that the Oscar-winning actress-turned-princess, Grace Kelly brought to life on the big screen in films such as “Rear Window,” “Vertigo,” “The Country Girl,” “High Society,” and “To Catch a Thief.”
The evening was hosted by Black and actress Susan Claassen, performing in-character as 8-time Oscar winning costume designer, Edith Head. Head was the most prolific costume designer in Hollywood working in movies from 1925-1982. Her costume designs can be seen in more than 400 films including “A Place in the Sun,” “Roman Holiday,” “Sabrina,” “Samson and Delilah,” “The Sting,” and her final film was the Steve Martin flick, “Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid.” As Edith Head, Claassen remained completely in character and provided a running narrative of the Grace Kelly-inspired vintage fashion show. “Head’s” Hollywood knowledge was exceptional, and she even had a fantastic photo scrapbook that she shared at the tables outlining her career in costume design.
In addition to the fashion show, LON’S at Hermosa Inn’s Executive Chef, Jeremy Pacheco orchestrated an Oscar-caliber dinner for our group. To kick things off, we had a shrimp and crab “Louie” salad with gem lettuce, hearts of palm, blackstone dressing and a mini quail egg for a tasty Sonoran accent. Next was an outstanding French onion bisque topped with a parmesan tuile. The delicate flavor combined with the rich texture set the stage for the entrée – braised beef shortrib stroganoff and Tristan lobster over egg noodles with asparagus, crème fraiche and blue oyster mushrooms. Finally, dessert was a fun throwback – baked Alaska! It’s been years since I had it and LON’s version was outstanding.
