Concert to Feature Michael McDonald and Opening Act, Raquel Aurilia
You know the voice. You know the face. You know his biggest songs. Kenny Loggins is an American treasure who has been entertaining us for decades with his catchy tunes and heartfelt ballads. Now, the two-time Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter will headline The Good Life Festival with friend and sometime collaborator, Michael McDonald on April 8 at The Good Life Festival at Encanterra.

Loggins is no stranger to Arizona and looks forward to returning to the Valley in April. “I can remember the Celebrity Theatre,” Loggins recalls. “Gosh, that was with Loggins and Messina in about 1971. That was a great theater.” He also dated a woman in Arizona for seven years and spent a good bit of time in the state during that time.
In the Beginning…
The singer/songwriter rose to fame by initially penning some tunes for the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band before really breaking into the mainstream with Loggins and Messina, with musical partner, Jim Messina. But the industry has changed immensely since the early 1970s and Loggins takes note that stars are now born on shows like “The Voice.” He reminisces about a more recent time before reality music competition shows took over. “The last great star of that ilk, in my guess, was Beyoncé. I don’t know if it’s happening to that level anymore,” Loggins states. “There are so many ways to be seen, and so little opportunity to make a living.”
A Lifetime of Hit Songs and Collaborations
Collaboration is one of Loggins’ strong suits and he embraces it. In fact, Loggins earned both of his Grammy Awards, sharing them with friend, Michael McDonald for co-writing “What a Fool Believes,” which was recorded by both Loggins and McDonald’s group, The Doobie Brothers. The second Grammy came as a result of mega-hit song, “This is It.” McDonald will be performing at The Good Life Festival, too, and it’s a good bet we might hear Loggins and McDonald perform together!
He continued with a string of solo hits including “I Believe in Love,” a song originally sung by Barbra Streisand for the soundtrack for film, “A Star is Born.” Hit songs Loggins sang with other artists include “Whenever I Call You Friend,” co-written with Melissa Manchester and sung with Stevie Nicks, and “Don’t Fight It,” that he sang with then-Journey front man, Steve Perry.
There was a time when Loggins was considered the “King of the Movie Soundtrack.” The 1980 film, “Caddyshack” produced the daffy and lovable hit, “I’m Alright.” Shortly thereafter, “Footloose” and “I’m Free (Heaven Helps the Man)” were both huge hits from the film, “Footloose.” Next was “Meet Me Half Way from the Sylvester Stallone film, “Over the Top.” Then, “Top Gun” produced hits, “Danger Zone” and “Playing with the Boys.” Loggins also did the theme song from Caddyshack II, “Nobody’s Fool.” So, you know when you attend The Good Life Festival at Encanterra on April 8, you will be in for a fun musical journey that includes a dose of Hollywood!
There are some people that Loggins would love to get a chance to work with in the future. “As far as the newer acts, I just sang on a Thundercat’s record,” Loggins explains. “Michael (McDonald) and I co-wrote it sang on his new single and his album. It’s climbing up the charts right now. I’d also like to write and record with Ed Sheeran, and a young act named Johnny Schwinn. But, there are some young songwriters that I’m reaching out to… I want to start writing again, and that could be fun to do.”

Loggins occasionally has dabbled in film and television, but it’s not his focus. “I like the cartoon versions of me,” Loggins laughs. “There’s going to be a cartoon version of me on ‘Family Guy’ that is coming out next year. I did the voice for it. I also did the voice for the cartoon version of me on ‘Archer.’ That’s always fun, but I have no plans to be acting.”
The prolific recording artist is also now a part of country music trio, Blue Sky Riders, with Gary Burr and Georgia Middleman. The group’s first album “Finally Home” debuted in 2013. A new record has just been finished, and they are in talks with BMG to release it internationally. There is also a Kenny Loggins solo project which will be a ‘family’ record. Loggins says, “Twenty years ago, I made a record called, ‘Return to Pooh Corner,’ and it’s the biggest selling children’s record of all time, they tell me. It’s hard to believe that I beat out Barney… but you never know. So, I’m recording a follow-up. But it’s not a children’s record, it’s really the parent’s record that children can love along with them.” He continues, “We’re trying to figure out a name for it. Right now, we’re calling it, ‘Night Songs.’ We hope to come out with it, probably in the second quarter of this year.”
I asked Loggins about what lessons he’s learned in music over the decades. He quickly replied, “Wow, that’s a big question. I need more coffee!” He goes on to say, “Lessons… I think as far as music goes, try to work with good musicians, and try to listen to them. And it’s one thing to have and express your ideas, but it’s another to listen to their ideas. The older I got, the more I realized that the stuff to pay attention to was the creative ideas from other avenues, because you always get better ideas that way.” Spoken like the true collaborative artist that Kenny Loggins is.
