Craft 64 Boasts Is on Its ‘A-Game’ with Tasty New Menu Offerings
Most beer aficionados and denizens of Old Town Scottsdale are familiar with Craft 64. In less than two years’ time, the gastropub has positioned itself as one of the most delicious spots in the Valley to enjoy wood-fired pizzas, local craft beers, food made fresh daily with local ingredients and some of the friendliest staff to be found anywhere.
I recently got the chance to stop in and check out three brand new menu items and two new beers. Yes, Christmas came early for me this year! I love how owner and brewmaster at Craft 64, James Swann is always thinking first and foremost about quality, and it shows.
The first new item on the Craft 64 menu is a new bruschetta special called, “Olive Me.” Appropriately named, this delicious appetizer boasts large, fresh baguette slices generously covered with house made olive tapenade, roasted red peppers, whipped spiced goat cheese and topped with a kiss of lemon zest. Every flavor shines through in this delicious appetizer that is perfect for two people to share.
Next up on my tasting journey was a farmer’s salad – the French Bistro Bacon. This hearty salad boasts loads of fresh local ingredients and is definitely large enough to be its own meal. The salad features frisee, spinach and olives topped with bacon Dijon mustard vinaigrette and a strategically placed pile of thick-sliced bacon pieces. The whole salad is finished off with an oven roasted over easy egg. As I dug into the salad, the egg yolk mixed into the fold for a scrumptious taste sensation.
Finally, it was time for the Craft 64 pizza special – the “Meat-Ovour.” The freshly wood-fired pizza that we observed being made through the open window kitchen features a tomato sauce base with mozzarella, parmesan, mushrooms, onions, pepperoni, salami and sausage. It has just enough meat to make the pizza meaty, but not so much that it overwhelms the rest of the ingredients. This pizza also has a pleasant little kick of spice to it! I was impressed through and through, and I particularly love that one pizza is the perfect size for two or three people to share. Craft 64 also features other varieties of wood-fired pizzas, including some of the most popular – margarita, blanco and the aji. Also, don’t miss the wood-fired focaccia sandwiches made like only Craft 64 can.
What would a lunch at Craft 64 be without a beer sampler? My lunch guest and I enjoyed sample glasses of Frolic, Craft 64’s very own American Pale Ale, and Wicked Winter Tale. Craft 64 pays homage to winter beer favorite, Pete’s Wicked Winter Ale with its own take on this beloved beer. Wicked Winter Tale is Craft 64’s seasonal beer that imparts hints of nutmeg and raspberry. It is as refreshing as it is reflective of the season. Craft 64 also features a solid wine and cocktails menu including signature mules (don’t miss the ’64,’ mule. It’s fantastic!), classic cocktails, martinis and assorted bourbons.
Whether you go for the food and stay for the beer or vice versa, you’ll be glad that you visited Craft 64. Cleverly named for the fact that there are 64 ounces in a growler of beer (and yes, they do fill growlers), Craft 64 effectively merges at the intersection of gastropub, wine bar and artisan pizzeria.
